Grades 7 and 8 contain multiple class sections, and students in these grades continue to follow an expanded departmental program in preparation for high school.
Grades 7 - 8 (M – F, 7:55 – 2:40)
In grade 7, students will define, compare, and evaluate ideas when reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and will analyze how themes in fiction and nonfiction develop over the course of a book or article. Readings will include classic and contemporary texts that represent diverse perspectives. Students cite specific evidence when interpreting texts and use relevant evidence to support points in their writing and speaking. Logical reasoning and constructive evaluation skills are developed. In mathematics, seventh graders use statistics to draw inferences and gain deeper understanding and fluency working with equations, proportional relationships, and positive and negative numbers. An advanced pre-algebra math class (Honors Math) is also offered in seventh grade. ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Religion are all conducted as separate, departmental subjects, and Spanish language study is expanded to four class periods weekly. Daily religious training continues, and students participate in prayer and Mass services. All seventh graders take weekly Computer Education, and Physical Education classes.
In grade 8, in preparation for high school, Eighth Graders read, analyze and interpret major works of fiction and nonfiction, citing evidence of explicit and implicit meaning and authors’ points of view. They plan and conduct multi-step research projects using print and digital sources. Grade 8 students make oral and written presentations, discuss and debate topics using sound proofs and supportive reasoning, and evaluate information presented through varied media sources. They use rich vocabulary to speak and write precisely and accurately. In mathematics, the students continue to write and reason using algebraic expressions and equations, and they are introduced to linear equations and functions. An advanced Algebra math class (Honors Math) is also offered in Eighth Grade, which includes Ninth Grade content and enables students to take the NYS Integrated Algebra Regents exam. In addition, a TACHS prep class is offered to Eighth Grade students who wish to apply for admission to Catholic high schools. ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion continue as separate, departmental subjects, and Spanish Language continues to be taught three times weekly. Daily religious training continues, and students participate in community service projects. Grade 8 students also prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. All Eighth Graders take weekly Computer Education and Physical Education classes.
